Espressione Noir

Alta Langa DOCG
Blanc de Noirs

Espressione Noir is Giulio Cocchi‘s brut nature from important vintages, made with 100% Pinot Noir, with no reserve wines, and five years’ ageing on lees.

With Espressione Noir Giulio Cocchi interprets the characteristics of the vintage in question with pure black grapes, enhanced by long ageing and with zero dosage, for a taste that faithfully reflects the spirit of the high Langa lands in every vintage. Grapes characterised by well-balanced concentration and acidity which, right from the moment they are harvested, suggest a cuvée for long ageing.

VINTAGE 2018

The 2019 vintage stood out as an exceptional year from a climatic perspective across Piedmont. It was the fifth warmest year of the previous 62 years, with a regional average temperature of approximately 10.6°C and a thermal anomaly of +1.5°C compared with the 1971–2000 climatological average (ARPA Piemonte data).

Winter was characterised by mild temperatures and limited rainfall, resulting in an early start to the growing cycle. Spring brought alternating periods of thermal stress: significant temperature variations in March favoured optimal bud differentiation, while a late cold spell in May required careful vineyard management. Temperatures gradually increased in June, culminating in an exceptional heatwave between 26 and 29 June. July confirmed the warm character of the summer season. Total annual rainfall reached 1,295.5 mm, representing a 23% surplus compared with the average and placing 2019 among the wettest vintages recorded since the post-war period.

VINIFICATION AND SPARKLING WINE MAKING

The grapes were harvested entirely by hand to preserve their integrity. From the pressing process, only the finest must fractions were selected, with a yield of 50%. The first fermentation took place entirely in stainless steel. Following tirage, the wine was aged on its lees for five years. The zero dosage enhances the grapes’ natural acidity and highlights the varietal character of Alta Langa Pinot Noir from the 2019 vintage.

TASTING NOTES

Pale straw yellow in colour, with fine and persistent bubbles. The nose opens with delicate floral notes that gradually gain intensity, revealing candied white fruit and hints of almond kernel. Five years of lees ageing provide depth and complexity, creating an austere yet precise aromatic profile. On the palate, savoury notes intertwine with vibrant acidity in a dynamic balance, supporting a fluid progression and a long, well-defined finish. A Pinot Noir of great character and remarkable ageing potential.
