  • Repost from @hollyandflora - Today is #WorldPeaceDay, and my friend, Matt @theamateurmixologist, challenged me and several other cocktail enthusiasts to create a cocktail that celebrates and encourages PEACE.

I had a hard time narrowing my ideas down to one drink, so I’ll be sharing two this evening. This first one is named, “Visualize Whirled Peas”, a vegetable-forward concoction of snap peas, cucumber, basil, tarragon, and lemon verbena.

I make a concerted effort to thank those who bring joy to my daily experiences, and I strongly believe that broad shifts toward peace and love begin with small steps in your immediate world. Speaking up. Doing what’s right. Giving thanks.

These herbs and vegetables were grown with love here in my new hometown of Paonia, Colorado, and I also used a local gin by @drytownsocial. I love supporting the makers who work hard and provide for their communities.

• 4-5 cucumber slices
• 2 ounces snap pea-infused gin {I used @drytownsocial}
• 1/4 ounce basil-infused @giuliococchi Americano
• 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
• 1/2 ounce tarragon- and lemon verbena-infused simple syrup
• 1/4 ounce Yellow @chartreuse.fr
• halved snap peas, for garnish

1. In a mixing tin, muddle the cucumber slices.
2. Add the snap pea-infused gin, basil-infused Cocchi Americano, lemon juice, herb simple syrup, and Yellow Chartreuse.
3. Add ice, shake well, and strain into a chilled cocktail glass or coupe.
4. Garnish with a halved snap pea.
5. Go find and make all of the peace-themed tipples, via #peacepours.

This one is dear to my heart as I have seen what greed for power does to a country. It destroyed an economy, brought hunger to its people, separated families, inticed war on the streets, parents burying their children is not the curse of nature. We put people in power to guide us towards a bright and a more prosperous future not to chaos, hunger, and war.  There is no way to peace. Peace is the way. Venezuela wake up! 💛💙❤

My cocktail is called "Lejos Pero No Ausente" it roughly translate to "I am far away but I am not absent"
.
I am using Venezuelan Rum @rondiplomatico exclusiva // @giuliococchi Barolo Chinato // @giffardusa Crème de Fraise des bois // @angosturahouse bitters .

I’m not sure which origin story is true for this cocktail — origin or not, perhaps they are all true. But what I do know is that a Manhattan was made with rye whiskey and Italian vermouth. Dashes of bitters, gum syrup, and absinthe appear in some of the oldest recipes, but we have since dropped the latter dashes in favor of a three-ingredient cocktail.

The vermouth must be Italian, or as it is said in the March 8th edition of the Racine Wisconsin Daily Journal, “A cocktail made from the French brand is no more a Manhattan cocktail than it is a Spanish omelette.” My home recipe for a Manhattan is with a couple dashes of Angostura bitters, Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, and a bold rye whiskey. Willett Rye, Wild Turkey 101 Rye, and Knob Creek Rye are some favorites as far as whiskey goes. Garnish is simply expression of lemon oils, and a Filthy Foods Amarena cherry.

1.5oz London dry gin
1oz Dolin Blanc vermouth
0.5oz Cocchi Americano
2 dashes orange bitters
Orange peel garnisha
